Job Description:

The Water and Sewer Maintenance Worker I-II is responsible for the maintenance, and operation of the District's water and wastewater systems.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Water/wastewater distribution/collections operations and construction

Use of power and manual hand tools

Construction techniques and materials for water/sewer main and service installation and repairs

Water meter installation, water meter reading

Drinking water treatment techniques and methods

Water quality regulations - current Federal, State, and local rules and regulations of safety and the construction, maintenance, and operation of the water and wastewater systems

Ability to:

Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload and meet strict deadlines

Effectively operate heavy equipment, excavate around utilities, operate excavation equipment, and tools used in the assigned specialty area

Interpret and explain blueprints, plans, and specifications

Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Perform arithmetic calculations involving multiplication, addition, subtraction, division, decimals, and fractions

Train new personnel on work procedures

Evaluate situations, identify problems, and exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines

Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals

Follow oral and written instructions

TYPICAL DUTIES -    Typical duties are performed under general supervision.  Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Reads and interprets plot book maps (District map with underground facilities) to locate underground facilities.

Operates standard pickup trucks and valve operating machinery for everyday field work,               including field testing water meters, backflow prevention devices,             and fire services.

Writes field notes, office reports, and technician records to document service and inventory for future repairs, testing, rebuilds, and customer inquiries

Shuts off/turn on water or installs flow restrictors on delinquent accounts

Deal courteously and professionally with customers and those contacted in the course of work to respond to complaints and service requests

Sanitary surveys in accordance with DEQ

Perform weekly rounds and chlorine maintenance checks

Perform all aspects of water sampling

GIS/GPS Mapping

Infrastructure rehab and new construction installation

Locating, Leak detection and repairs

Pump House maintenance and repair

Perform other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED

(2) years of increasingly responsible experience in construction, maintenance, or operations with a public or private water utility organization with experience in one of the following specialty areas: water construction and maintenance, water meter testing and maintenance, or sewer system maintenance.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES

The following are required at time of application and for the duration of employment:

A valid Idaho Class D driver's license.

A valid Class A Commercial driver’s license with applicable endorsement within 6 months of employment.

A Valid Water Distribution/Collections Operators License (Grade DWD-1 or above), issued by the State of Idaho.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Incumbents of this class may be required to work unusual hours in emergency situations and to be available on an "on call" basis.

Because of the possibility of emergency situations, it is required that the applicant be able to respond within 30 minutes to the District Offices, located at 13649 N. Meyer Rd., Rathdrum ID.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Receives general supervision from the Operations Supervisor.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job.
