Job Description:

 

The Water Quality Specialist will report to the Washington Water Quality Manager and is responsible for implementing the water quality requirements to ensure compliance for Washington Water Service. Primary responsibilities focus on sample coordination, data management, regulatory reporting and capital project support. The position is located in Olympia, WA.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Assists Water Quality Manager with creating and maintaining monitoring schedules and implementing monitoring requirements to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and sampling programs
  • Prepares monthly sampling plans/packets and dispatch to water system operators (includes completion of lab slips and ordering of sample containers)
  • Coordinates sample collection, tracks samples collected, and results received
  • Reviews and reconciles lab invoices with samples collected; validate charges for approval to pay
  • Monitors sampling supplies and maintain adequate inventory to administer the sampling program
  • Reviews lab reports and field data worksheets; performs data entry and recordkeeping; reports out-of-compliance or suspect results to Water Quality Manager for follow-up
  • Prepares water quality reports for management and the Washington State Department of Health related to wells, distribution system, and treatment plants; submit reports as required
  • Assists with managing corrective actions relating to unsatisfactory coliform sample results as they are received from the lab including notification, resampling, documenting in the water quality events chronology, and reporting
  • Assists Water Quality Manager with creation of Annual Consumer Confidence Reports (CCRs)
  • Provided support for capital projects – reviewing engineering and construction plans, coordinating sampling, and evaluating results
  • Responds to water quality emergencies as needed, may include preparation of draft precautionary boil water notices for Water Quality Manager
  • Responds to customer requests for water quality test results and other information
  • Performs customer database and public record searches for water quality information
  • Maintains water quality records retention process
  • Assists Water Quality Manager with special projects
  • Communicates with the contract laboratories and regulatory agencies, as needed
  • Participates in and support the Company’s Continuous Improvement program and projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and/or equivalent relevant experience
  • One year of experience using a Laboratory Information Management System specific to data entry and water quality monitoring scheduling.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications
  • Valid Washington Driver License
  • Upon hire, must provide proof of COVID vaccination status

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Knowledge of applicable drinking water laws and regulations to include Safe Drinking Water Act, Washington State Department of Health, and local county health
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of water system operations
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic water chemistry and proper water sampling procedures
  • Read, understand and effectively communicate technical information, both verbally and in writing; demonstrate good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrate commitment to providing excellent customer service

 

Salary Range: $52,000 - $93,400
