The Superintendent is responsible for the development, training, and scheduling of Washington Water Service (WWS) Water Quality Field Technicians; for data acquisition, fulfilling Department of Health (DOH) monitoring requirements and populating monthly DOH reports in accordance with DOH guidelines as well as building and maintaining strong working relationships with the Washing State Department of Health, Department of Ecology, and other WWS department heads to accomplish WWS objectives. The Superintendent prepares reports for Washington State Department of Health and is required to oversee operations, maintenance and repairs to all treatment facilities. The position is located in East Pierce, WA.



  • Supervises staff, including prioritizing and assigning work; may conduct performance reviews, and may oversee the training of staff

  • Operates and maintains chemical pumps and motors

  • Oversees testing, repairs, and maintenance of safety equipment

  • Handles hazardous materials

  • Monitors and records chlorine residuals throughout the distribution systems

  • Monitors and records overall operation and security of well sites

  • Operates and maintains filtration systems

  • Operates motor vehicles

  • Coordinates with, communicates with, and engages outside agencies and officials

  • Supports the relationship between WWS and the general public

  • Participates in the supervisory after hours on call program

  • Operates fork lift

  • Schedules and supervises tasks for water quality field technicians

  • Manages projects and assets

  • Participates in and supports the Company’s Continuous Improvement program and projects

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent relevant water utility experience

  • Five years water system operations or potable water treatment experience

  • One year of increasingly responsible experience in a supervisory role desired

  • Water Distribution Specialist, Cross Connection Specialist, and Water Distribution Manager 2 certifications

  • Water Treatment Plant Operator 2 certification, First Aid Certification, and Fork Lift Certification, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire is required

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A Driver’s License and CDL Hazmat endorsement are desired

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Must be able to perform complex mathematical formulas

  • Knowledge of DOH reporting requirements and deadlines, sampling requirements and scheduling

  • Knowledge of document management and storage systems

  • Basic knowledge of electrical wiring and diagrams; must be able to read wiring and site diagrams or plans

  • Working knowledge of Chlorine and pH analyzer functions, maintenance and operations, operation and maintenance of pH treatment facilities and controls as well as Sodium Hydroxide and pH adjustment terminology

  • Working knowledge of SCADA applications and functions, Chemical feed pumps (Stenner, variable speed, LMI, Grundfos, Milton Roy), and water system operations and maintenance

  • Must have an understanding of local, state, and federal laws, codes, and regulations regarding water treatment

  • Knowledge of PLC operations and functions, the operation and maintenance of disinfection systems, variable speed motors and their functions, and troubleshooting mechanical failures

  • Demonstrated ability to provide efficient customer service and communications

  • Experience managing a team of employees as well as thoroughly carry out and deliver written and verbal instructions

  • Demonstrated ability of discretion and good judgment while applying and adhering to established procedures, guidelines, and rules

  • Demonstrated ability of analyzing and defining problems, establishing fact, and drawing valid conclusions when managing the function and the staff of the Production department

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peer supervisors, managers, employees, and external customers

  • Experience operating a personal computer and various software applications, analyzing and organizing data, time and asset management, and safety protocol, procedure, and equipment

Salary Range: $74,400 - $134,000
