Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of electrical, mechanical and electronic systems, including but not limited to, the City’s water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, and related facilities and systems.


Electrical/Electronic Maintenance

  • Initiates and performs electrical/electronic troubleshooting and maintenance on a variety of equipment and facilities.
  • Replaces, adjusts, and rebuilds electrical/electronic process control instrumentation, control systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC), remote telemetry units and/or related systems.
  • Calculates current loads, fuse sizes and other electrical requirements to ensure proper operation of equipment.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical equipment associated with booster pump stations, including generators, engine control cabinets and switches.
  • Maintains, repairs and installs lights, receptacle outlets, switches and related electrical equipment and systems.
  • Maintains all electrical control panels including lighting, distribution, surge and HVAC. Performs preventive maintenance on all motors, starters, transformers, valves, compressors and related electrical equipment.
  • Maintains low voltage relays, timers and other electric devices.
  • Troubleshoots, maintains and programs variable frequency drive (VFD) components, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and motor starters.
  • Locates and marks underground electrical conduit and cable, trench or dig for underground conduit, pull wire for power and control applications.

Mechanical Maintenance

  • Initiates and performs mechanical maintenance, including troubleshooting, replacing, adjusting, and/or rebuilding defective machinery, parts and associated equipment. Install new machinery or related components.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Performs preventive maintenance by exercising pumps; inspecting, cleaning and lubricating equipment, such as motors and generators. Maintains and cleans all equipment at sewer pump stations.

Diagnostic Analysis

  • Performs diagnostic and fault analysis on electronic, mechanical, process control, pneumatic, pumping, hydraulic, and other systems.

Record Keeping

  • Maintains a variety of records related to inspections, repairs and maintenance activities. Maintains accurate reports, logs, and plans.


  • Assists with projects to upgrade and/or replace equipment, instruments and systems.
  • Drives trucks and forklifts of various sizes and weights used in the loading, hauling and unloading of various pieces of equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in the training of employees to increase their skills in the maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities.
  • Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as needed and assigned.


 Education and Experience

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship training program and/or completion of industrial, electrical, vocational or technical school training program; AND
  • Minimum four (4) years of experience as an electrician or electrician’s helper; OR
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the incumbent with the necessary qualifications may be considered.

  • Equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical/electronic and mechanical equipment.

Skills & Ability to:

  • Proficiently use electrical/electronic tools and equipment.
  • Basic computer software and use: word processing, e-mail, data entry, etc.
  • Use and safely operate a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Operate motor vehicles of various sizes and weights.
  • Work safely.
  • Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other departments and the public.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.

Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire for work-related travel.
  • Must pass appropriate background checks.
  • Ability to work on-call status for 24-hour emergency call-out; typically for one-week periods.


Persons in this classification are required to routinely operate the following equipment:  Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, man-lift, saws, pumps, compressors, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, mobile phone, and other city vehicles and equipment as may be required.


While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works outdoors in various weather conditions, including severe cold and, snow, ice or wet and rainy situations. The employee works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to wet and/or slippery conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places or confined spaces and is routinely exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and contaminated matter, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud; use of personal protective equipment is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, detect odors; and must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Schedule: M-F 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM, some evening, weekend, on-call shifts

Pay Range: $28.31 - $34.41 per hour
